The Work is a powerful process of self-inquiry developed by spiritual teacher Byron Katie. It’s designed to help individuals question the thoughts that cause suffering, anxiety, and inner conflict. Katie’s core teaching is this: “It’s not the world that causes our suffering, but our thoughts about the world.”
Rather than trying to change our outer circumstances or other people, The Work invites us to investigate and shift our inner dialogue. This practice leads to clarity, freedom, and peace.
🔍 The Four Questions of The Work
At the heart of the method are four simple but profound questions used to examine stressful thoughts:
- Is it true?
(A yes or no answer—not explanation.) - Can you absolutely know that it's true?
(Digging deeper—invites honest reflection.) - How do you react—what happens—when you believe that thought?
(Notice the emotional, physical, and behavioral effects.) - Who would you be without the thought?
(Explore what changes when you let go of the belief.)
🔄 The Turnaround
After inquiry, the next step is to turn the thought around—to its opposite, to yourself, or to the other. This step is not about judgment or blame but about discovering alternative perspectives and deeper truth.
Example:
Original thought: "He doesn't listen to me."
Turnaround: "I don't listen to him." or "I don't listen to myself."
These shifts can reveal insights, soften rigid beliefs, and dissolve emotional pain.

Start by reading each Spiritual Practice Question slowly, allowing it to stir reflection within. Use them as journaling prompts, meditation themes, or heart-centered conversations with your higher self.
Lessons: Three Reflective Questions
- What recurring stressful thought am I believing—and is it absolutely true?
- How do I behave when I believe this thought? Who suffers most?
- What would freedom feel like if I lived without that thought?
Deepening the Practice:
- Am I willing to see the opposite of my belief as just as true—or truer?
- What inner peace or personal responsibility is waiting behind the thought I'm defending?
